Self-Pay: How It Actually Works

Paying directly — "self-pay" or "private pay" — is more workable than most people assume, for two reasons. First, you only pay for the level of care you need: a clinical assessment might point to an intensive outpatient program rather than months of residential care. • Employer assistance. Many employers offer confidential help through employee assistance programs (EAPs), and HR conversations about substance abuse are more protected — and more common — than people fear.

• Rehab scholarships. Some treatment centers and nonprofits offer scholarships covering part or all of treatment — it never hurts to ask.
