What TRICARE Beneficiaries Can Access at SOBA Recovery
TRICARE covers substance use treatment across the full continuum for eligible service members, retirees and family members. Which level you enter is set by medical necessity and, for Prime members, by the referral your primary care manager approves:
- Medical DetoxMedically supervised detox with 24/7 care to manage withdrawal safely, typically the first step before the rest of treatment begins.
- Residential InpatientLive-in treatment with structured therapy and around-the-clock support, for those who need to focus on recovery away from daily demands.
- Partial Hospitalization (PHP)Full days of clinical treatment with evenings back at home, a structured step down from inpatient care.
- Intensive Outpatient (IOP)Structured treatment scheduled around duty, work, or family commitments, for those continuing care at a lower level of intensity.
- OutpatientOngoing counseling and support for service members, retirees, and families maintaining recovery while living at home.
How TRICARE Covers Addiction Treatment
TRICARE covers substance use disorder treatment for eligible service members, retirees and family members, but what applies to you depends on your plan and your region.
TRICARE Prime generally requires a referral and authorization from your primary care manager before you begin treatment at a civilian facility. TRICARE Select gives you more flexibility to choose a provider, though authorization is still commonly required for inpatient levels of care. Arizona sits in the TRICARE West Region, and your regional contractor handles authorizations and claims.
