Aetna substance use benefits reach across the continuum of care, and the level you enter is the one Aetna authorizes as medically necessary. That can include:

- Residential InpatientLive-in care with structured therapy and constant support, for those who need a full break from daily triggers to focus on recovery.
- Partial Hospitalization (PHP)Full days of clinical treatment with nights spent at home, a structured step down when inpatient care is no longer needed.
- Intensive Outpatient (IOP)Regular structured sessions that work around your job or family, with precertification handled by our admissions team.
- OutpatientSteady counseling and support to help you hold onto progress while living at home.
How Aetna Handles Addiction Treatment Coverage
Aetna typically requires precertification for inpatient levels of care, meaning the plan has to authorize residential treatment or medical detox before admission rather than after. Our admissions team handles that process directly with Aetna so it does not fall to you or your family during an already difficult week.
Beyond authorization, your cost depends on your deductible, your coinsurance, your out-of-pocket maximum, and how your plan treats in‑network versus out‑of‑network providers. SOBA works with Aetna members on both bases.
