What Is Addiction?
Addiction is hard to define with a broad definition as it’s complexity varies between individuals and substances. Individuals will have compulsive behavior with a fixation for a certain substance or activity, even if it’s causing obvious physical or financial harm. Fortunately, there are advances in addiction treatment that help people recover from their addictions and learn how to live productive lives while preventing relapse.
In particular to drug addiction, regular use of harmful substances messes up the way neurotransmitters work in the brain. This leads addicts in a downward spiral of increased dependence and forming poor lifestyle choices that affect their relationships, sleep, eating habits and employment.
For some individuals, past emotional trauma or peer pressure plays a major role in acquiring addictive habits. This can manifest itself from drug, alcohol, gambling or just about any other form of addiction. Staying away from such individuals can be just as important as the brain chemistry component to addiction.

Our Addiction Treatment Process
What Is Addiction Treatment?
Addiction of any kind should be treated as a chronic disease, and any decent addiction treatment program should include inpatient and outpatient components. The intensity of the treatment is determined on a case-to-case basis, and some patients prefer outpatient addiction treatment programs to retain their freedom.
One of the main challenges is making the person aware that they have an addiction problem and need addiction treatment. This may be made evident from their lack of performance at work, distancing themselves from a friend, or symptoms of physical ailments due to their addiction. The denial that their addiction controls their life is not uncommon, but they can be steered in the right direction eventually.
For others, they may be aware of their drug addictions but are unable to stop due to having a strong chemical dependency. Such individuals are harder to get into voluntary treatment and may end up going to inpatient care due to an event that may happen and causes them to be forced into treatment.
In extreme cases of drug addiction, medical detoxification may also be a necessary step during treatment. Depending on the drug, the user’s physical health and level of dependence, there are physical side effects that are hard to manage without interference by medical professionals. Both inpatient and outpatient clinics may be staffed by doctors and nurses to help manage symptoms and monitor that patient’s overall health.
